Racine

Racine was established in 1834 and incorporated in 1848. Much of the city’s appeal is related to the continuing existence of sites that represent different stages of Racine’s development. Examples include the Wind Point Lighthouse and Old Engine House #3, both built in the 1880’s, and Wingspread, a home designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930’s. Wingspread is now a conference facility owned by the Johnson Foundation. Other notable sites include S.C. Johnson’s Co Administration Building and Research Tower, also designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Racine is also home to the memorial site of Dr. Laurel Clark. Racine dedicated a lakefront fountain to the memory of Dr. Clark in July, 2003, to commemorate her heroic efforts as both “Physician” and “Astronaut” aboard the STS-107. Sadly, the mission ended abruptly on February 1, 2003 when Space Shuttle Columbia and her crew perished during entry, 16 minutes before scheduled landing.

Racine is also home to one of only 11 free zoos in the country. The Racine Zoological Gardens is a 32-acre site situated on the north side of downtown. Established in the 1920s as a very small operation with only three monkeys, the zoo has now become a relaxing destination of choice. The grounds are gorgeous, with great views, nature trails, picnic areas and flower gardens. The animal collection has grown in number to over 250.

Throughout the year, organized community events provide the opportunity to gather and enjoy Racine’s culture. The largest annual event is the weeklong Salmon-A-Rama fishing tournament and festival. A 30-year tradition, the salmon festival offers music, food, and activities for all ages and commercial exhibits. The Harbor Fest music festival is also popular, drawing in a crowd of about 30,000 each June. Other events include the Lighthouse Legacies Quilt Show, Starving Artists Fair, Armenian Festival and Italian Festival.

Racine County and its neighbors are regions of four seasons: comfortable summers, colorful autumns, white winters and vibrant springs. Temperatures range from the low-teens in January to the high-70s in July and August. Annual rainfall averages 35 inches and snowfall usually reaches 45 inches each year. Snowfall is generally heaviest between December and March.
